Steve's Pick for Cool Site of the Week

Michael Naylor an Associate Professor at Department of Mathematics at Western Washington University has created a new concept in explaining geometry. His site HumanGeometry.com for the Human Geometry Project is an ever-growing collection of fine art designed to teach people more about geometry.

Another of his projects called Naked Geometry also explores the concepts of fractals, the golden ratio, hypercubes and more.

I am sure that we will see many exciting geometry concepts explained on his blog.nakedgeometry.com site.

If you have ever wondered what a hypercube really is, his sites are worth taking a look at.

Vonage Internet Phone Service

I recently signed up for Vonage Voice Over IP (VOIP) internet phone service. I have been very happy with it so far.

I purchased a Lynksys Phone Adapter with 2 ports for Voice-over-IP. This was very simple to configure. I just plugged an ethernet cable into the phone adapter, and plugged in a normal telephone to the adapter.

The Linksys Model PAP2 was just over $50 at Amazon.com, with a $40 rebate.

There are several Vonage phone service plans. I chose the Residential Premium Unlimited plan for $24.99 per month. This plan has unlimited local and long distance calling anywhere in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

The Residential Premium Unlimited plan also has many call waiting, call forwarding, voicemail, and caller ID features.

One of the nice features is that when you get a voicemail message, it can be automatically forwarded to an email address of your choice. All of your voicemail messages can end up in your email inbox.

So far the sound quality has been as good as a "real" phone line. I am impressed, if the service turns out as good as it appears to be so far, I may consider dropping my real phone line.

The one difference that I did notice with the Vonage line is that when you pick up the phone it takes a little longer than a normal phone line to get the dail tone, maybe 1 second. It is not a problem, just something strange that I noticed.

I am very happy with this service so far.

Some of the competitors for Vonage are:
Net2Phone
JoiPhone
Voip Your Life
Vonics
Verizon
Packet8
MondoTalk

Additional Note: June 9, 2007
After having Vonage phone service for just over 2 weeks now, I have only had one issue with the Vonage service. When using Vonage to call the FreeConference.com service, I get a very garbled connection. I have tried this multiple times, and have had trouble every time. The only way that I was able to user FreeConference.com was to switch over to my normal land line, and give up on the Vonage line for that call. After doing some research, it appears that this has something to do with the fact that both services are voip, and the compression on the audio going through the FreeConference.com service.
